Pita Bread also known as an Arabic Bread, is a flatbread common in Mediterranean and middle eastern cuisines. Leavened with yeast, these are a good alternative to traditional breads, and are perfect for sandwiches, wraps, pizzas, hummus dippers and more!

This homemade Pita bread recipe is very easy to make, and requires a few ingredients that you may already have.
The procedure is so straightforward: mix up a dough, let it rise, do a quick bake and you are ready to enjoy soft, fluffy, puffy homemade Pita breads.
The texture of this bread is soft, fluffy, with a light chew which can be folded without cracking.
Perfect to stuff the entire pocket with Falafels or any other stuffing.

They can be made in an oven, or on a stovetop. These are freezer friendly, you can even prepare the dough ahead of time and keep it in the fridge.
These are far superior to any Pita bread you get in the grocery store.

1. Always bake pita bread at high temperatures

2. Preheat the pan you are planning to bake pitas on (a must step for puffed pitas)

3. Always keep them covered for perfect soft texture

4. You can use whole wheat flour or half and half of both flours to make it

5. Make the dough nice and soft

  • 2 cup all purpose flour / whole wheat flour / both half and half ( little more for dusting)

  • 1.5 tsp instant active yeast

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp olive oil/ any other oil(a little more for drizzling)

  • 3/4-1 cup warm water for making a soft dough

1. In a wide bowl take flour, sugar, salt and instant active yeast. Mix everything well

2. Add olive oil, and gradually add warm water to make a soft dough, knead for 3-4 minutes ( it's ok if the dough is slightly sticky ).
Drizzle with some oil, cover and let it rest for 1-1.5 hours

3. After about 1 hour, the dough should have doubled in size. If not, keep it for a little longer.

4. After the dough has proofed take it on a dusted surface and get it together.

5.Now divide the dough into 6-7 equal balls, cover and let them rest for 30 min

6. After 30 minutes, the dough balls would have increased in size.

7. Now, roll each ball into 6-7 inches circles and place on pieces of parchment paper. Let it sit for about  15 min, covered on the counter.

8.  Preheat the oven at 550 F / 280 C with the the pan / pizza stone in the oven.  ( You will need an extremely hot pan / pizza stone to bake Pita's on )

9. After 15 minutes, place the prepared Pita breads on the preheated pan with the parchment paper for 3-4 minutes. If you like less browning, take them out in 2-3 minutes.

10. If you plan to cook on stovetop, heat the griddle / tawa nicely. Place the Pita bread on it ( without the parchment paper ) and cook for 2-3 minutes on both sides ( keep flipping ).

11. The Pita's are ready to be enjoyed, make sure to always keep them covered for freshness and softness.
